How Long Do Lash Extensions Last? Everything You Need to Know About Lash Retention

Lash extensions are a game-changer when it comes to enhancing your natural beauty. But one of the biggest questions we get is, how long do lash extensions last? The truth is, the longevity of your lash extensions depends on proper application, aftercare, and your natural lash cycle. In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about lash retention, lash extension styles, and even answer the popular question: can you swim with lash extensions?
How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?
Lash extensions last as long as your natural lashes do. Since every lash is in a different stage of its natural cycle, extensions will shed as your real lashes fall out. On average, most people lose 2-5 natural lashes per day. If applied correctly with high-quality adhesive (like the one we offer!), your lash extensions will stay in place until the natural lash sheds.
However, poor aftercare can cause premature shedding. Rubbing your eyes, sleeping on your face, or not drying your lashes properly after washing them or swimming can all lead to retention issues.
Does Retention Vary Based on Lash Extension Styles?
Retention should be consistent across all lash styles if applied properly. However, different lash styles require different levels of maintenance.
- Russian Volume Lashes: This style can last up to four weeks and still look beautiful due to the way the fans are applied.
- Wispy & Anime Lashes: These styles can start to look uneven within a week and a half since they involve different layers and lash lengths growing out at different rates.
- Classic Lashes: Classic sets usually require a fill every two to three weeks to maintain fullness.
If you want to keep your lash extensions looking fresh, make sure to follow proper aftercare and book fills at the right time!
How Long Before You Need a Lash Fill?
At Mish Esthetics Salon, we recommend a fill every two to three weeks. If you wait longer than three weeks, we consider it a full set instead of a fill. This is because, by that time, most of your extensions will have grown out, and the lash artist will need to remove and replace them instead of just filling in gaps.
To qualify for a fill instead of a full set, you should still have at least 40-50% of your extensions intact. If most of your lashes have fallen out or the shape of your lash style is no longer visible, a full set will be required.
Can You Swim With Lash Extensions?
Yes, but with caution! Swimming won’t ruin your lashes, but not drying them properly afterward can hurt retention. Here are some tips to protect your lashes while swimming:
- Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching your lashes when they’re wet.
- Use a lint-free towel or air-dry your lashes after getting them wet.
- Brush them gently with a clean spoolie once they’re dry.
- Avoid saltwater or chlorinated pools for the first 24-48 hours after a fresh set or fill.
